Human activities, marine pollution, plastic waste, coastal construction, and overfishing pose serious life threats to sea turtles. The Mediterranean coasts serve as ideal habitats for these species. In particular, the beaches in Antalya and Muğla stand out. Where Do Caretta Carettas Live?

Caretta Carettas live on warm seashores around the world. Tropical and subtropical regions are safe habitats for them. In Turkey, the Mediterranean coasts play a crucial role for Caretta Carettas. When considering where sea turtles lay their eggs in Turkey, Belek and Patara are the first beaches that come to mind. During the nesting season, local people and hotels take several precautions for them to lay their eggs safely. First of all, beach lighting is reduced because Caretta Carettas’ hatchlings tend to turn to artificial light instead of sea light. So, businesses on the coastline reduce lighting and aim to minimize light pollution. The areas where the turtles will lay their eggs are surrounded by barriers and warning signs. They are closed to human and car traffic. After the eggs are laid, the nests are marked by volunteers and the local team; they are protected by covering them with cages or fences. The beaches in the nesting areas are cleaned regularly. Sand cleaning is very important for turtles to be able to move on the beach. However, water sports, motor vehicles, and human activities are restricted and kept at a certain distance. In this way, Caretta Carettas can reach the sea without being disturbed. Finally, volunteer groups and local protection teams inform the local people about the issue to raise awareness. In doing so, the continuity of generations is successfully ensured and protected.
